There's a reason winter is the best time of year to think about buying a used car: Sellers are desperate to get the things off their hands, and buyers are few and far between. It's nice not to have much competition when out shopping for used cars. Here are 8 tips to help you buy a used car in the winter months:

Tip # 1: Your Winter Budget. Factor your potential monthly car payment into your budget, and don't forget to include those credit cards and holiday bills coming due in January and February. If you know you're going to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars during those months on gifts for your family and friends, you may need to adjust your down payment, buy a used car or a cheaper new car, or hold off on your purchase. At the same time, you may see your monthly take-home pay drop during the winter, depending on how you are paid.

Winter with its cold, damp weather presents unique challenges when it comes to test driving a used car, which is why you need to follow these tips on how to test drive a used car in winter for the best results.

2. Winter Worthy Used Car. Make sure the car's components that are most important in winter are working properly:

· Inspect the battery, which could have its power reduced by up to 50 percent by severely cold temperatures.

· Check the belts, hoses and wipers.

· Check the tires for proper tread, inflation, and determine their all season traction.

· Test the heater and any cold weather features like heated seats, rear window defroster, etc.

· If equipped, make sure the four-wheel-drive or all wheel drive system is operating properly.

3. Road test the car in an empty parking lot. Snow and ice on the roads make you more conservative when road testing a used car. Consider going to a large empty parking lot like you might find at a high school, and drive just like you would in a summer day test drive. Get the vehicle up to speed and jam on the brakes-test the car’s ABS system (it should kick in with a thump-thump-thump if working properly). Also, when braking, see how straight the car stops. Pulling in one direction or another could indicate brake or alignment problems.

Here are some tips for you personally while inspecting and riding in the car:

4. Bring a towel. Use the towel to rub on spots or stains on the car’s exterior, because they might be permanent. You're going to see spots and stains in the winter that might not be permanent. Give it a quick rub with your towel, just to see if it's wet snow or ice that can be cleaned easily. Also, use your towel or rag to wipe your hands off while looking underneath the hood.

5. Bring a change of shoes. Don't judge a car on how it feels when wearing your winter boots. Bring a pair of sneakers or shoes so you get a feel for how the vehicle drives the rest of the year. Bulky, clumsy boots just won't give you a true feel for the car and you might end up turning down something you would have really liked.

6. Keep your coat on and test the A/C. This is the best way to test the air conditioning. A bulky coat is going to demonstrate how you might feel on a hot summer day. Does the air conditioning cool you sufficiently? If so, it's probably going to work fine come winter time.

7. Take your coat off and test the heat. See how quickly it can warm you up on a cold day. It's an important consideration. Don't settle for how it warms you while already wearing a warm winter coat, because it’s not the same.

8. Take your gloves off. Your fingers, not surprisingly, are extremely tactile. Your sense of touch is going to help you find flaws with the car that you won't find with the gloves on. However, you should make sure part of the test drive does have some glove time. You still need to see how things can work with your bulky finger warmers on.

I received this unsolicited e-mail from one of our used car buying customers this week:

"I just wanted to email you and let you know how thankful me and my wife were when you approved us to take the car home last night. Our 2^nd car of the year broke down over the weekend, and could only borrow a car from a family member up until yesterday. So we were in a huge bind and appreciate you helping us. The fact that you are willing to take time at night and look at emails was extremely surprising but you really are true to your word and goes to show you really want to help people.

After visiting your dealership on Tuesday night, I decided to look at a couple other places before making a decision. 1^st Low Book Sales, which claimed to be the number one used car dealership in the state of Utah and willing to help anyone in any financial situation. I told them that we had picked a car out at your car lot, and they told me to be careful because you charge very high interest and have been known to sale lemons. After filling out an app and running our credit, he took it to his manager and when he returned he explained he was unable to do anything for us. That we didn’t even qualify for in house financing. Needless to say we were shocked and felt incredibly dumb.

The 2^nd dealership we decided to visit was First Class Cars, which claimed to be the dealership that started the in-house financing and were the credit experts. They wanted an $800 deposit and said they could get us into a good reliable car, they asked what kind of car were interested in and explained we had a 2004 Chevy Cavalier picked out at your lot and wanted something similar. He then explained that places like yours claim you are approved and give you the car but a couple of days later call us back and tell us to bring back the car or give a larger down payment. Afterwards he takes us to look at the cars available with an $800-$1000 down payment. Most were in bad shape and in the 90’s. He then shows us a 89’ Toyota Corolla and tells us his mom had one and got over 300,000 miles on it before it broke down. At this point we were freezing from walking around outside and let him know we weren’t interested.

When we returned to your dealership we were greeted by Cole which was very helpful and did his best to help us in any way...Again THANK YOU for giving us an opportunity to rebuild our credit while getting into a car we really like and will serve our needs. People like you are rare and we really appreciate that."-CP

Myth #1: There is no way you can get a car loan if you have problems paying off other loans.

Fact: Bad credit used car loans are readily available from many different lenders. Given the recent financial crunch, more and more banks and credit unions have started offering more affordable financing options to people with problems in their credit history. Myth #2: A short term bad credit car loan is more expensive.

Fact: Actually, the shorter the term of the used car financing, the more affordable the deal is. Now, a short term deal may not be more beneficial for a person with bad credit, as the monthly repayment installments are higher.

Myth #3: There is no way to negotiate the interest down.

Fact: There are borrowing programs, with extension and refinancing options, which give you the opportunity to renegotiate the interest after a set period of time. If you have managed to improve your credit score by this time, you will be able to lower the interest, at least to an extent. Many of our used car buyers have interest rates at or below 20% APR.

Myth #4: You cannot do anything to improve your credit score when having such a loan.

Fact: This form of financing (as long as you may payments on time), can only boost your credit score. However, it takes more effort to get a major improvement. You need to repay all of your debt on time. This includes credit card and utility bill payments.

These facts will give you a better understanding of the options you have when looking for and using bad credit car loans. You may realize that things are not as bad as they may seem. Just be prepared for the challenges ahead.

If your score is below 600, expect some trouble securing credit, at least with favorable terms.

Use this checklist while buying any used car you are considering buying. Following this checklist assures you will cover all the bases when checking out a car or truck to buy in Salt Lake City. A used car purchase must be considered carefully. Here are some car buying guidelines:

Body or Paint Work. The Conditions noted below may indicate that the car was wrecked, poorly kept or has been driven excessive miles:

· Look at the vehicle during the daytime as darkness may hide problems.

· Do not look at vehicles in the rain, which hides nicks and scratches, as well as making thin, worn paint look slick.

· Concentrate on big defects, not minor repairs they can be made easily and inexpensively.

· Look for ripples, waves, poorly fitted panels and mismatched colors, which may indicate that bodywork may have been done.

· Look for dents or rust around the bottom of the doors and fenders. A bubble along molding or chrome indicates rust underneath.

· Look under the vehicle for rust as well. Rust gone through the metal could be major repairs.

· Check for welding spots on the frame that may indicate a serious accident or repairs.

· Open and close the doors, hood, trunk or hatchback. Be sure they fit and are easy to close without slamming, sagging or sticking.

Car Needing Service or Repair: The Conditions noted below may indicate that the car needs service and/or repair work:

· Stand back approximately 10 to 15 feet from the car and see if the car is level. If one corner seems lower than the others, it suggests a broken spring or other chassis or suspension problem.

· Check the shocks by pushing down on each corner of the car and letting go. Your car should bounce upward only once and then settle back to its original position. If the car bounces several times, new shocks may be needed.

· Check the tires. They should be in good shape without sidewall cracks. Uneven tire wear may indicate improper wheel alignment, tired shocks or worn front-end components.

· Check the inside of the tires for brake fluid leakage (indicating leaking wheel cylinders).

· Look under the car for oil spots, or leaks from the transmission, power steering or shock absorbers.

· Open the hood and check belts and hoses for cracks or wear.

· Remove the radiator cap. The coolant should be a clean, greenish (or blue or yellow, depending on brand of coolant used) color. Brown sludge inside the radiator neck may indicate poor maintenance.

· Pull out the oil dipstick. If the oil is gummy or grayish, the engine might have serious problems. If there is a black buildup near the top of the dipstick, smell it. A burnt smell indicates that the engine or transmission has been run hot.

· The automatic transmission fluid should be clear and reddish in color, not brown or black. A burnt smell or low fluid level indicates neglect.

· Be sure and check the fluid level in the master cylinder as well. If the fluid level is low, check for leaks and have brake pads checked. Look inside the trunk. Make sure there is an inflated spare tire, a jack and a lug wrench.

Inside of Car. The interior can give you a good idea of the overall condition and how well the entire car has been maintained.

· Mileage Today's cars average approximately 15,000-20,000 miles per year. In addition, compare the service stickers on the doorjamb or under the hood to see if the recorded mileage is consistent with the odometer reading. It is possible to obtain a history of service as well, depending on where the vehicle was serviced.

· Seats, belts and carpeting. Lap belts and shoulder harnesses should be in good shape with no rips, tears or frayed webbing. The upholstery should be clean with no large rips or cracks.

· Windows: See if they open and close easily. Manual windows should crank smoothly. Power windows should not hesitate. All glass should be free from serious cracks or scratches.

· Pedals: brake, accelerator and clutch. These pedals should work smoothly without strange noises or binding.

· Lights and flashers on the car should operate properly.

· Warning lights and gauges: Start the engine and check the warning lights, gauges and instrument panel, as well as all the accessories to make sure they work.

· Heater and the Air Conditioning: No matter what the temperature is outside, be sure to check both the A/C and heater.

· Glove box: Look in the glove box for the owner's manual. It contains maintenance information and important data on engine tuning, fluid capacities and replacement parts.

Drive Test: Before taking out on the road:

· Start the engine and press down on the brake. The brake pedal should go down only an inch or two and should feel firm and solid, not spongy. Press down on the brakes for about a minute. If the pedal sinks slowly, there may be a leak in the master cylinder.

· As the engine warms up, listen for any noises such as knocks, ticking and rattles, which could indicate engine problems.

· Put the car in neutral and rev the engine. Look in the rear view mirror to see if there is any smoke coming out of the exhaust. If there is a lot of white or bluish smoke, the engine may need an overhaul.

· At idle, the engine should be smooth and quiet. Punch the gas pedal to see if the engine responds without hesitation and then returns to normal idle.

Drive Test: On The Road:

· When first starting out, drive slowly to get the feel of the car. The automatic transmission should shift smoothly without jerking, slipping or hesitating.

· A manual transmission should shift smoothly between gears without grinding.

· The clutch should engage and disengage smoothly without grabbing or chattering.

· Make sure the reverse works.

· Drive on a flat, smooth road and lift your hands slightly from the wheel. The car should track straight and be stable without vibration. If the car pulls in either direction or "shimmies", a front end alignment or other front-end repairs may be necessary.

· Brakes:To test the brakes, accelerate to 30 to 40 miles per hour. Make sure there are no cars behind you, then step hard on the brake pedal. If possible, buy a car equipped with ABS Antilock Brake System. ABS simply keeps your brakes from locking up and allows you to keep your car from swerving and allows you to keep steering control on wet and slippery roads or during a panic stop.

· The brakes should grab evenly and the car should slow down in a straight line.

· If the car pulls to the left or right, it indicates the needs for brake adjustment or a system re-build.

· A grinding noise indicates badly worn pads or linings.

· Drive at 35 miles per hour and listen for any unusual noises. If you hear a whining sound from the rear-end, it may need replacing.

· Accelerate to 45 miles per hour. If the front end shakes or vibrates, the tires probably need balancing.

· Drive quickly over a rough road and listen for any loud squeaks or rattles.

· If the car bounces or bangs over small bumps, the shock absorbers may be worn and need replacing.

· After you have driven the car for a while, check the temperature gauge to see if it shows a high reading or if the temperature warning light (be sure this works!) comes on. These are signs of trouble with the cooling system and they can be very expensive.

· Engine Response: Accelerate hard on an empty road. The car should respond immediately. Back off and hit the gas again. There should be no hesitation or smoke from the car. The engine should accelerate smoothly with no strange noises.

· You may want to find a steep hill to check the engine's power. If there is a significant loss in power while climbing, the car may need an overhaul or a tune-up.

· While you're on the hill, test out the hand brake to make sure that it holds the car.

After Road Test Check:

· When you are through with the test drive, it's a good idea to turn off the car for a minute or two. Then restart the engine to see how well it starts when hot.

· Check again for leaks under the hood and beneath the car. Some leaks may only appear after driving.

· Check the tailpipe. An engine that is burning oil will leave a black, sooty oil deposit. A white, powdery residue usually means good fuel combustion.

Should I buy a new car, or a used car? A late-model used car can be one of the best values you’ll find when buying a used car. With relatively low mileage, modern safety and convenience features, and usually a much lower price than similar new vehicles, those used cars are in the “sweet spot” of auto buying deals.

A Consumer Reports study of car owner costs shows that choosing a three-year-old used car instead of a new one can save you thousands of dollars over the first five years. In many cases that’s enough to pay for all of your gas during that time.

According to the used car savings analysis, buying a 2005 Toyota Camry with a V6 engine, for example, could save you about $13,000 over five years compared with buying a new 2008 version. At $4 per gallon, you could pay for all of your gas during that period (based on driving 12,000 miles a year) and still be almost $2,500 ahead.

Similarly, buying a three-year-old Ford Focus can save you more than $8,000 over the first five years, or the equivalent of four years of free gas, compared with buying a new Focus.

Need a large SUV but you’re scared of the dismal fuel economy? With demand for big SUVs plummeting and their used-car values dropping, you could save $25,500 over five years—or the equivalent of seven-and-a-half years of free gas—by buying a three-year-old Chevrolet Tahoe instead of a new one.

On average, you can save 32% in the first five years, by buying a three-year-old car. Similarly, with a one- or two-year-old car, you can save 19% and 27%, respectively.

Another big plus is the ability to get a more upscale model with more features for the same owner cost, as a less expensive new car. If the car is certified, can I see the mechanic’s pre-certification inspection?

Every certified car has to go through an inspection before it can be certified. Ask to see that paperwork to find out what was fixed. It’s a good piece of paper to hold onto for future problems.

Who was the vehicle purchased from?

If it was a trade-in to that dealership, ask to see the maintenance records. If it was bought at an auction, make sure it is gone over with a fine-tooth comb by a mechanic who specializes in inspecting used cars.

Who certified a used car that is called certified?

The only certification that means anything is a manufacturer certified pre-owned car. All others are insurance backed programs that I have rarely heard good things about.

How long of a test drive can I take?

See if the dealer will let you take the car for an extended test drive. Put it in writing that you won’t put more than 100 miles on the odometer, prove you have insurance, and you’ll bring it back with the same amount of fuel that was originally in the tank.

Is a CarFax report provided before purchase?

A reputable dealership will have no problem with this. A disreputable dealership might, or worse yet, might present a doctored report. Make sure the report’s vehicle identification number matches the VIN on the used car you’re looking at.

What is the dealership’s return policy?

A consumer friendly dealership will probably give you time to rethink the purchase and at least provide you equal value. No dealership is going to offer you cash back.

What is your cash price for this used car?

Dealers try to make money off financing, but in any market, cash should get you a lower price. Point out to the dealer it eliminates a lot of work on their end when you plop cash on the table.

If the dealer won't give you a deal for cash, ask what kind of consideration they will give you for doing the financing through them. Just make sure the rate they offer is equal to or lower than what your bank or credit union would offer.

Cash should still get you a lower price but sometimes financing can work to your advantage, too. Either way, make your money work for you.

8. What is the miles per gallon of this vehicle?: These days, it wouldn’t hurt to ask about fuel economy and miles per gallon. Also ask about E85 fuel. Some vehicles with smaller engines use this flex fuel, which is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.

9. What service has the dealership performed on the used car since acquiring it?

This helps you determine what value you’re getting for your purchase. Complete overhauls mean you won’t be dealing with service repairs anytime soon after purchasing the car.

10. Do you take trade-ins?

This makes your life a lot easier if the dealership will handle this for you. Don’t let yourself get tied up in trying to selling your own used car, especially if you hate selling used cars.

For those of you who may have experienced some credit issues for the first time in your life due to the economic mess we all find ourselves in these days and you’re concerned about what you’re going to run into while shopping for a car let me attempt to put your mind at ease.
We have been dealing with banks that recognize the difference between a person who’s just plain flakey and doesn’t care vs. someone that’s responsible and conscientious but simply ran into trouble due to unforeseen circumstances like so many of us have experienced in recent years. These banks have been around for years. In fact they were around long before the sub prime mortgage mess made the word “sub prime” taboo. These people make very fair loans to customers that otherwise are great people.
During the mortgage meltdown they were forced to cut back on the amount of loans they did simply because no one would give them money to loan because they were affiliated with that taboo word “sup prime”. But these lenders were making responsible loans to customers long before the mortgage mess ever occurred. In fact they went through a similar melt down in the late 1990’s and learned their lessons. So now that everything has calmed down somewhat these lenders are now able to find money to loan to people just like you. In fact for the first time in over two years they are actually calling us wanting our business.
I believe there are a lot of people out there just like yourself that really need a car but do not want to take the chance that they might be turned down for a car loan or forced into a car they don’t want or have to pay an extremely high interest rate. The issue more times than not is not you. It’s the dealers you’re trying to do business with. They simply don’t know what they’re doing. We do! We’ve been doing this for over ten years and we’ll help you get into the right car at the right price.

I have had a wave of friends and family that had excellent credit when times were good. They made some investments in real estate and other ventures because that's what you do when you have money, it's easy to get a loan and things are appreciating. If only we had all known! Needless to say there are a TON of folks out there in this boat. After attending several conferences where Buy Here Pay Here dealers get together we realized that this was a must do for our customers and here's why... There are two big differences between Lease Here & Buy Here Pay Here for our customers:
